Nikon F-mount lenses on Z cameras

Nikon's FTZ II (and the earlier FTZ) fit F-mount DSLR lenses to Z cameras. Lenses with a focus motor inside keep autofocus; older screw-drive lenses focus by hand. Here is which is which.

Which F lenses keep autofocus

F-mount lens typeAutofocusNotes
AF-S and AF-P (focus motor in the lens)YesVR keeps working. Most of Nikon's DSLR lenses since about 2010.
AF-IYesOlder super-telephotos with a motor.
AF and AF-D (screw drive)No, manual focusThe adapter has no focus motor. Focus peaking on the Z body helps.

On a DX (APS-C) Z body

DX F-mount lenses frame as on a DX DSLR: their focal length times 1.5. FX F lenses frame 1.5 times tighter too. Third-party F lenses from Sigma and Tamron often work; their makers list which.

What it adds

About 135 g and the F-to-Z flange difference in length. A Z DX lens of the same kind is usually smaller; each camera's page lists them.

Questions

Does the FTZ II autofocus with AF-D lenses?

No. AF and AF-D lenses are driven by a motor in the DSLR body, and the FTZ II has none. They mount and meter, but you focus by hand.

Is the FTZ II better than the FTZ?

It works the same way. It drops the tripod foot, which makes it slimmer and stops it catching on the camera's grip.
