How these picks are made
  • Everyday and travel: a zoom from about 28 mm to at least 70 mm equivalent, lightest first.
  • People and portraits: the brightest prime framing like 70–135 mm that weighs under 300 g.
  • Wide scenes and rooms: the widest zoom under 600 g, lightest on a tie.
  • Distant subjects: reach of at least 300 mm equivalent under 1.5 kg, longest reach per gram.
  • Close-up and macro: life-size (1x) or more, lightest first; otherwise the highest magnification.
  • Low light: f/1.4 or brighter framing like 35–60 mm, lightest first.

Before you buy

  • 43 of these 84 lenses weigh more than the Z30 itself (405 g with battery and card). With those, you carry the camera by the lens.
  • The Z30 has no in-body stabilisation, so 65 of these 84 lenses (those without lens stabilisation) rely on shutter speed alone.
  • 47 of the 84 are made for full-frame cameras. They fit and work; they are usually larger and heavier than an APS-C lens with the same view.

Memory card and battery for the Z30

What to buy with it, and what to do in the first hour.

Memory card

One card slot, SD with the UHS-I bus. Any SDXC UHS-I card works for photos; a UHS-II card works too, at UHS-I speed. For 4K video, use a card rated V30 or faster.

Battery

EN-EL25: about 330 shots using the screen per charge by the CIPA test. It charges inside the camera over USB-C (switched off), so a spare battery and a power bank cover a long day.

The first hour

  1. Charge the EN-EL25 fully before the first outing (in the camera, over USB-C, or in a charger).
  2. Insert the card, then format it in the camera: Menu, then the card or set-up tab, then Format. Copy anything on it first; formatting erases it.
  3. Set the language, date and time; the date goes into every photo's file.
  4. Fit the lens: line up the mount marks, turn until it clicks. Release by pressing the lens button.
  5. Take a test shot and play it back before you set off.

Z30 lens questions

Can I use full-frame lenses on the Z30?

Yes. 47 of the 84 lenses here are made for full-frame Nikon Z cameras and mount directly on the Z30. On this APS-C sensor they frame 1.5 times tighter than their focal length: a 50 mm lens frames like 75 mm.

Can I use Nikon F-mount (DSLR) lenses on the Z30?

Yes, with Nikon's FTZ II (or FTZ) adapter. AF-S and AF-P lenses keep autofocus; older screw-drive AF and AF-D lenses mount but focus manually. Which F lenses keep autofocus

Which memory card does the Z30 take?

One slot: SD, UHS-I. For 4K video use a card rated V30 or faster.

Does the Z30 charge over USB?

Yes. The EN-EL25 charges inside the camera over USB-C while the camera is off.

Does the Z30 have in-body image stabilisation?

No. Stabilisation comes from the lens: 19 of the 84 lenses here have it.
