How these picks are made
  • Everyday and travel: a zoom from about 28 mm to at least 70 mm equivalent, lightest first.
  • People and portraits: the brightest prime framing like 70–135 mm that weighs under 300 g.
  • Wide scenes and rooms: the widest zoom under 600 g, lightest on a tie.
  • Distant subjects: reach of at least 300 mm equivalent under 1.5 kg, longest reach per gram.
  • Close-up and macro: life-size (1x) or more, lightest first; otherwise the highest magnification.
  • Low light: f/1.4 or brighter framing like 35–60 mm, lightest first.

Before you buy

  • 42 of these 62 lenses weigh more than the EOS R100 itself (356 g with battery and card). With those, you carry the camera by the lens.
  • The EOS R100 has no in-body stabilisation, so 23 of these 62 lenses (those without lens stabilisation) rely on shutter speed alone.
  • 44 of the 62 are made for full-frame cameras. They fit and work; they are usually larger and heavier than an APS-C lens with the same view.

Memory card and battery for the EOS R100

What to buy with it, and what to do in the first hour.

Memory card

One card slot, SD with the UHS-I bus. Any SDXC UHS-I card works for photos; a UHS-II card works too, at UHS-I speed. For 4K video, use a card rated V30 or faster.

Battery

LP-E17: about 430 shots using the screen, 340 using the viewfinder per charge by the CIPA test. Canon's page does not say whether it charges over USB; plan on the external charger.

The first hour

  1. Charge the LP-E17 fully before the first outing.
  2. Insert the card, then format it in the camera: Menu, then the card or set-up tab, then Format. Copy anything on it first; formatting erases it.
  3. Set the language, date and time; the date goes into every photo's file.
  4. Fit the lens: line up the mount marks, turn until it clicks. Release by pressing the lens button.
  5. Take a test shot and play it back before you set off.

EOS R100 lens questions

Can I use full-frame lenses on the EOS R100?

Yes. 44 of the 62 lenses here are made for full-frame Canon RF cameras and mount directly on the EOS R100. On this APS-C sensor they frame 1.6 times tighter than their focal length: a 50 mm lens frames like 80 mm.

Can I use my old Canon EF or EF-S lenses on the EOS R100?

Yes, with one of Canon's EF-EOS R mount adapters. Autofocus and image stabilisation keep working with Canon's EF and EF-S lenses; the adapter adds about 110 g and 24 mm. What the EF to RF adapter keeps

Do RF-S lenses also work on full-frame Canon RF cameras?

Yes. Canon's full-frame EOS R bodies accept RF-S lenses and switch to an APS-C crop automatically, so the lens keeps working if you move up to full frame later.

Which memory card does the EOS R100 take?

One slot: SD, UHS-I. For 4K video use a card rated V30 or faster.

Does the EOS R100 charge over USB?

Canon's specification page does not say. Plan on the external charger for the LP-E17.

Does the EOS R100 have in-body image stabilisation?

No. Stabilisation comes from the lens: 39 of the 62 lenses here have it.
