To use 49 mm-thread lenses with larger filters you already own, a step-up ring screws into the lens and takes the larger filter: 49–52 mm, 49–55 mm, 49–58 mm. 49–52 mm ring 49–55 mm ring 49–58 mm ring

Filters smaller than 49 mm (40.5 mm, 43 mm, 46 mm) need a step-down ring, which darkens the corners on most lenses; we do not suggest it. Smaller-thread lenses can use 49 mm filters through a step-up ring: 40.5 mm lenses, 43 mm lenses, 46 mm lenses.
