To use 58 mm-thread lenses with larger filters you already own, a step-up ring screws into the lens and takes the larger filter: 58–62 mm, 58–67 mm, 58–72 mm. 58–62 mm ring 58–67 mm ring 58–72 mm ring

Filters smaller than 58 mm (49 mm, 52 mm, 55 mm) need a step-down ring, which darkens the corners on most lenses; we do not suggest it. Smaller-thread lenses can use 58 mm filters through a step-up ring: 49 mm lenses, 52 mm lenses, 55 mm lenses.
