Memory card for the Sony FX30
The FX30 has two slots for CFexpress Type A or SD (UHS-II), and its 4K video wants a card rated V30 or faster. What to buy, and what changes it.
CFexpress Type A or SD (UHS-II) · V30 for 4K
- Slots
- 2 × CFexpress Type A or SD (SD: UHS-II)
- Bus
- UHS-II: a UHS-II card writes long bursts faster; a UHS-I card still works, at UHS-I speed
- For video
- Rated V30 (UHS Speed Class 3) or faster for 4K; the highest bit-rate modes need the CFexpress Type A card
- Two slots
- The camera can write every photo to both cards, so one card is a backup of the other

Which card for what you shoot
- Photos: any SDHC or SDXC card works; the camera's UHS-II bus sets the top speed.
- Long bursts: a faster card empties the camera's buffer sooner, so you wait less after a burst; a UHS-II card makes the most difference here.
- Video: Rated V30 (UHS Speed Class 3) or faster for 4K; the highest bit-rate modes need the CFexpress Type A card.
Format it in the camera
Format a new card in the FX30 before the first shot: Menu, then the card or set-up tab, then Format. Copy anything on the card first; formatting erases it.

Questions about the card
Which memory card does the FX30 take?
Two card slots, each taking a CFexpress Type A card or an SD card (UHS-II bus). Any SDXC UHS-II card works for photos in an SD slot; a UHS-II card clears long bursts faster, and a UHS-I card still works at UHS-I speed. For 4K video, use a card rated V30 or faster; the highest bit-rate video modes need a faster card, and the maker's manual lists which.
Does the FX30 take UHS-II cards?
Yes. Its SD slot has the UHS-II bus, so a UHS-II card runs at full speed; a UHS-I card works too, more slowly.
Does the FX30 have two card slots?
Yes: 2 × CFexpress Type A or SD (SD: UHS-II).
