Macro lenses for APS-C cameras

A macro lens focuses close enough to fill the frame with something small. Life-size (1x) puts a 2.4 cm insect across the whole APS-C frame. Here is every lens reaching at least half life-size on each system.

The rule: lenses reaching half life-size (0.5x) or more; sorted by magnification, then lightest.

What the numbers tell you

Magnification is the number to read: 1x means the subject is as large on the sensor as in life, so an APS-C frame about 23 mm wide shows a subject 23 mm wide. At 0.5x it shows a subject twice that size. The focal length decides how far away you stand at that magnification: a 30 mm macro works a few centimetres from the subject, a 90 or 100 mm macro about 10 to 15 cm from it, which keeps your shadow off it and insects from flying away.

Depth of field at 1x is a few millimetres even at f/8; that is optics, not the lens.

Questions

How are these macro lenses chosen?

By one rule from the published numbers: lenses reaching half life-size (0.5x) or more; sorted by magnification, then lightest. No lens is paid to appear, and none is left out for having no Amazon listing.

Which of these fits my camera?

Every lens in a system's list fits every camera of that system. Choose your camera above to see its section first, or open your camera's page for weights with the camera.
