Lenses for portraits on APS-C cameras

A lens that frames like 75 to 135 mm lets you fill the frame with a face from a comfortable distance, and a bright aperture blurs what is behind it. Here is every lens that qualifies on each system.

The rule: primes framing like 70 to 135 mm at f/2 or brighter, and zooms reaching 85 mm equivalent at f/2.8; sorted brightest, then lightest.

What the numbers tell you

Portrait framing is about distance: from a metre and a half to three metres, faces keep natural proportions, and a short telephoto view fills the frame from there. On APS-C that is a 50 to 85 mm lens. Brightness gives two things: a faster shutter speed indoors, and a shallower zone of focus. For example, Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary on a Sony a6400 at f/1.4 and 2 m keeps 7 cm in focus, from 1.97 to 2.03 m.

What the numbers cannot tell you is how a lens renders out-of-focus light or how quickly it focuses on an eye; that varies by design and is not in any specification. For a family group in a small room, a portrait prime is too tight; the kit zoom or a 23 to 35 mm prime fits more in.
