Lenses for wildlife and sports on APS-C cameras

Wildlife and field sports need reach: 400 mm equivalent and beyond. APS-C helps, framing every lens 1.5 or 1.6 times tighter. Here is every lens that reaches 400 mm equivalent on each system, lightest reach first.

The rule: lenses reaching 400 mm equivalent or more; sorted by reach per gram.

What the numbers tell you

Reach is the first number: at 600 mm equivalent a small bird 15 metres away fills a useful part of the frame; at 300 mm it is a speck. Weight is the second: lenses that reach 600 mm weigh from about 600 g to over 2 kg, and you will hold them for hours. Stabilisation in the lens or camera helps you hold steady; it does not freeze a moving subject, which needs a fast shutter speed.

Autofocus tracking and burst speed matter as much as the lens and differ by camera; a camera's page shows its burst rate. We do not test tracking.
