What the numbers tell you

A 35 mm-equivalent view takes in a scene with people in it from a few steps away; 28 mm is wider and asks you to get closer; 50 mm picks out one person or detail. A small prime keeps the camera unobtrusive and in a jacket pocket on the flatter bodies. Zone focusing, setting the focus distance in advance at f/8, is easier on lenses with a focus scale or a camera that shows distance.
